I used to be obsessed with this place when it resided in Shudehill.
Once I discovered this place lived again in Stockport I put in on the back burner.
After a fab day out with the boyfriend I pleaded that we come here raving about its pastimes..
Sneakily located across the road from the Mcdonalds down a side street it lies.. Hastening in, a lady looked apologetic and asked if we had a reservation. We shook our heads noticing the packed restaurant for the first time. She asked if it would be okay to sit at the table behind us, I nodded enthusiastically.
Seated I took in the stark contrast from the previous place. Before it had been sterile looking with white clean walls and un-comfy plastic chairs. Now it was cosy, with its homely wooden chairs, pale green and brickwork walls... I could not see much more being sat near the entrance..
The menu now includes BBQ which explained the large circular holes embedded in the table. However, gone is the sushi :(
Drink-wise offers you various tea, juices, wine and Korean beer.
The food itself includes sharing hot pots. meat to BBQ ( you must order two portions though at £9 each) soups and rice earth bowl dishes.
We were still quite full from the popcorn we'd snaffled at the movies so I ordered the seafood spicy soup with thick noodles and himself a plate of belly pork and sliced beef to BBQ.
The food took a long time to turn up, and when it did there was a great lack of communication. They assumed we had ordered the meat to share as a starter.. because I was feeling more peckish my bf just told me to tuck in.. However after spreading it out on the burner the same waitress kept coming back every few minutes to cook the meat. This really ruined the intimate dining experience. I have had this cuisine many a time before and usually you are left to your own devices..
The same waitress brought out some lettuce leaves with pickled veg and explained in broken English how to wrap the meat ( after dunking it in the sauce) in the leaves then eat it. Anyway after the sixth time of her coming round to prod our food..my bf told her to sternly to leave us.
The meat itself was tasty, especially the pork belly however I think £9 each was very steep in price. After snaffling this, my soup then arrived.
The colour was perfect, and the broth itself was really tasty. I shared this out in some small bowls, the seafood was no where to really be seen though. I counted a handful of pipsqueak mussels, two defrosted prawns, two pieces of squid and two shelled prawns attached with egg sacks.. After a few mouthfuls I found it quite boring to eat and both decided to just get the bill.
We walked to the counter to pay up, to discover they had slapped on £4.50 for the lettuce leaves. The lady pointed to me and said i had eaten one of the leaves..This was the last straw, we had been continuously interrupted with people leaning over with tongs poking our meat, despite not noting our drinks had not been refilled all evening.. the soup being...underwhelming for £11 and now they were sneaking on £4.50 lettuce... We firmly said no to not paying for that and left.
Don't get me wrong, Baekdu never had the best service anyway but even the food could not save it this time. To go all this time to finally know your favorite restaurant has been resurrected to experience this..left nothing but ashes in my mouth.. Overpriced, irritating and sneaky. I shall not be back.
